Biography

William Rutland was listed in the census as a machinist. He was the father of Walter Rutland, grandfather of Louise Rutland Townes, and great grandfather of Peyton Townes and his siblings. He married Mary Ann Swain, who had a grandmother named Sarah Elizabeth Rutland, so William and Mary may have been cousins. There were numerous Rutlands and Swains in the region. However, records confirming the parents of William Rutland have not been identified, so his ancestry can not be confirmed.

Biography

Armistead Terrell Townes was a planter, and is referred to in connection with an Oak Hill plantation. He was described in hiis obituary as a person of "integrity and a lover of truth," with a kind and genial nature who was well regarded by his family, friends and communiity.

He served as Quartermaster Sergeant, 1 Regiment Cavalry, (Holcombe's) Virginia Militia in the War of 1812. (Source: War of 1812 Service Records). He was also involved in the government of Amelia County. He was a Deputy Sheriff, and he may have also been either an attorney or clerk of the courts, as his name is listed as a representative of parties in various legal cases and actions.

During this era, a migration of this branch of the Townes family began over the next two generations. While some members of the family stayed in Virginia, others moved to the south and west, primarily to Alabama and Mississippi, and then to Texas. Armistead was one of the first in this. He moved with his family(including his brother Allen) to Yalobusha, Mississippi between 1840 and 1850. He died there.

He was married twice, first to Rebecca Booker. They were the parents of Richmond and Amelia Townes. After her death in 1809 he married Elizabeth Moseley Giles, who was the mother of Adolphus Townes as well as nine other offspring. (Elizabeth's exact relationship in the Giles family is unclear, but in the next generation, when Adolphus married the daughter of William Branch Giles, he and his wife were referred to as "first cousins several times removed.) Also see petition in which Elizabeth's father is mentioned as a William Giles, who is not Gov. WB Giles.. from source https://lva.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01LVA_INST/altrmk/alma9917822105405756.

Biography

Elizabeth M. Giles parentage and her specific relationship to the Giles family has to be pieced together from evidence. She is likely a descendent of several families, including the Giles and Townes families.

One marriage record lists her father as George W. Giles. However this was likely wroing based on other evidence.

She and her husband Armistead Townes were petitioners in a request to sell land she and her siblings Rebecca Walker Giles and Edmond Giles inherited from their father, William Giles. This is not Gov. William Branch Giles or his son Wiliam Branch Giles Jr.

One account described her son Adolphus Townes and his wife Frances Ann Giles (Gov. Giles daughter) as cousins seversl times removed.

A Townes family history letter also mentions her as a descendent of William Townes through daughters and grandaughtes who married into the Walker and Macon and Giles families.

There is also a marriage record of a William Giles and Rebecca Macon.

These sources are shown below.1 (Research):Early Virginia marriages. Pt. I: Part I: Volume IV. (1907). (n.p.): Dalcassian Publishing Company.-- Marriage listed as Nov. 1800 - Elizabeth M (daughter of George W.) Giles and A.F. Townes.
