Christopher Branch
M, #528, Deceased, b. about 1600, d. 21 February 1682
Tree
Biography
(Research):Christopher Branch (circa 1600-1681) was an early English settler in Colonial Virginia, tobacco planter, and a member and justice of the House of Burgesses. In 1639 he was a member of the House of Burgesses from Henrico County[2] and was named a tobacco inspector that year. He was a member of the House of Burgesses again in 1641.[3] In 1656, he was the Justice of Henrico County.[6] He died in 1681[2] while living on the Kingsland Plantation. He was a three times great-grandfather of United States President Thomas Jefferson.
Early life and marriage
Branch was born in England around 1600.[1] or 1602. His parents were Lionel Branch and Valentia Sparks of London.[2] He married Mary Francis Addie, daughter of Francis Addie of Darton, Yorkshire, on September 2, 1619 in St. Peter's, Westcheap, London.[2]
Christopher and Mary Branch sailed to Virginia on the London Merchant in March 1621 and survived the Powhatan attack of 1622 the following year.[1][a] They were living at Colledg Land in Henrico by February 1623[4] when their son Thomas was nine months old.[1][2] According to the William and Mary Quarterly, Thomas was born in 1623. They then had two more sons. William was born in 1625 and Christopher was born about 1627.[2] His granddaughter Mary became the great-grandmother of President Thomas Jefferson,[5] making him the three times great grandfather of the president.[3]
Career
Branch acquired land in Henrico (now Chesterfield) County on the south side of the James River and north of Proctors Creek beginning in or before 1634[2][b] and established the Kingsland and Arrahattock Plantations.[1] Randolph first settled at Arrahattock on the north side of the James River. The Kingsland Plantation, which grew to 450 acres by 1639,[3] was located across the river from Arrahattock. [2][c] Branch operated a tobacco plantation[2] and due to a glut in the market, a limit of the tobacco crop to a percentage per planter was established by the Virginia General Assembly. The remainder of the tobacco crop was to be destroyed.[3]
His wife, Mary, died many years earlier,[3] likely before 1630.[7].
1,2 Christopher Branch and his wife Mary Addie were the original Branch immigrants to America and the progenitors of what became a large and influential family in Virginia, They are considered one of the original settlers of Virginia as listed in the "Jamestown Muster" of 1624.
The Branch family is also an important, er, branch of the Peyton Townes ancestral tree. Christopher Branch was the 7th Great Grandtahter of Peyton Townes -- he actually was his great grandfather several times through different lines. There were intermarriages in several generations among Branches and other nearby families, including the Osbornes and Giles and Moseleys.
Christopher Branch (circa 1600-1681) was an early English settler in Colonial Virginia, tobacco planter. Christopher lived to a very old age for the period, and outlived most of his children. Life was very hard in his era, and he lived in frontier areas where conditions were especilly difficult at the time. Although he aquired land and business success, and a respected position, his possessions were very modest at the time of his death.
Although he came from a prosperous and influentiial famiily in England, he was orphaned at an early age. His grandfather disinherited his father Liionel, "my disobedient and unthrifty son" but left a legacy for Christopher.
In 1620 Christopher and Mary embarked on the ship "London Merchant" dispatched from the Port of London for Virginia. This ship was commissioned by the Virginia Company and carried 200 passengers, mostly single men.
Christopher may have been a indentured servant, a category of immigrant who bound themselves to a sponsor, who they worked for for seven years, and then revceived a grant of land as a free person.
They originally lived in "ye colledge land" a site in Henrico County that was slated to be the site of a school to "civilize" the Native Americans. He later moved to Arrowhattocks on the James River and settled in Kingsland, a plantation he developed, on the south side of the river. He aqured over 2,000 acres.
By 1639 he was a member of the House of Burgesses from Henrico County. He was a member of the House of Burgesses again in 1641. In 1656, he was the Justice of Henrico County. He died in 1681 while living on the Kingsland Plantation.

Lionel Branch (Braunche)
M, #529, Deceased, b. 1566, d. 1605
Tree
Biography
Leonell Branch was considered a "black sheep" by his family. He was referred to by his Father, William, as "my unthrifty and disobedient son" possibly for leaving Abingdon to attend Oxford University in 1585.
When Valentia Sparkes was born in 1576 in London, England, her father, Ludgate, was 26, and her mother, Valentine, was 24. She met Leonell after he graduated from Oxford in 1590. Leonell and Valentina married on July 8, 1596 at St. Martin Ludgate, London (see picture). They had one child during their marriage, Chistopher Branch.
After their marriage, Leonell and his wife returned to Abingdon and all trace of him was lost. He died intestate. Lionell passed away in 1605 in London at the age of 39. They had been married 9 years. Valentina there too died as a young mother in 1605 at the age of 29. (Research):The seventh child and third son of William Branch was Lionel, baptized on August 18, 1566, and the immediate ancestor of Christopher Branch, founder of the Branches of VA. It is unfortunate that of this member of the family regrettably little is known. That he was something of a black sheep, or more charitably, a prodigal son, is evident from the terms of his father's will, in which he is castigated as "my unthrifty and disobedient sonne," to whom only a black gown and his father's best cloak were left."
Having left Abingdon sometime before 1596, Lionel nonetheless must have prospered, for on July 8, 1596, at St Martin, Ludgate, in the City of London, distinguished by the status of "gentleman," he married Valentia Sparkes, dau. of ________Sparkes, deceased, formerly a draper of the city of London. By her, apparently he only had one son, Christopher, who was provided for in his grandfather's will by a bequest of five marks on his attaining eighteen years of age. Lionel appears never to have returned to his native town.
Neither record of his burial nor of his will has been found. All one can say is that he probably died about 1605 in London, and died intestate.

Benjamin Branch1,2
M, #539, Deceased, b. 1665, d. 1706
Tree
Biography
The youngest son of Christopher Branch Jr. Benjamin was raised by his grandfather Christopher Branch Sr. after his parents died when he was an infant.
He inherited from his grandfather property that included the site of the Spring Hill estatei in 1686. He built a house and established a plantation. Although described as not ambitious, he maintained a fairly wealthy estate(and aquired aditional land to build what would have been considered very respectable; if not elite.Benjamin did remain a bachelor until he reached the age of 30, unusually old for a marriage at the time; However his reputation or family name did still allow him to marry Tabitha Osborne in 1695, the elder daughter of the wealthy Edward Osborne, the son of Captain Thomas Osborne of Coxendale. By Tabitha, he had one son, Benjamin II, born around 1700. Benjamin died in 1706.

William Branch (Braunche)
M, #543, Deceased, b. 1524, d. 1602
Tree
Biography
William was mayor of Abingdon. He was Burgess in 1558, Mayor in 1563/64 & 1582/83, & 1588.He was a member of Parliament in 1593.
He appears to have been financially prosperous. He had a shop on Little burg Lane near Burt Street in England.
He was appointed a governor of Christ Hospital in 1557, a position he held for 44 years, until his death. Christ Hospital was established in 1553, as a successor to the Fraternity of the Holy Cross. William's father, Richard had been Master of that fraternity for many years, until his death in 1544. The Fraternity was dissolved in 1547 by Henry VI and its possessions were confiscated.
One of the main accomplishments of Christ Hospital during the time that William was a governor was the creation of Abingdon School, which continued to exist into the twentieth century. His will was written on March 1, 1601 and proved in Prerogative Court of Canterbury on April 24, 1602. This is whom the Branches of Virginia descend. (Research):See attached sources.

William Moseley
M, #544, Deceased, b. about 1605, d. August 1655
Rolleston, William Moseley's home in Virginia.
Tree
Biography
William Moseley and his wife were the immigrants who established the Moseley family in Virginia. The desceendents of William and Susanna Moseley were numerous and many were prominent landowners. The family was influential in the founding and growth of Virginia and the U.S. over the years. The first generations lived in southern Virginia in the Norfolk area. Later members of the family moved north to Henrico (around the site of present day Richmond.)
They are great grandparents and related to the family tree of Peyton Townes through several paths.
William Moseley was born in England in 1605. His origins and parents are unclear. One theory is that he was born in London in 1606, and was the son of Richard and Katherine Moseley (Virginia Magazine of History. 52 (#3 July 1944): 220, However direct evidence of his parentage remains to be established.
He moved to Delft and Rotterdam Holland. One theory wsds that William was a Royalist Cavalier who fled to Holland to escape the Parliamentarian Roundhead in the civil wars of England. He was a goldsmith and a trader in other commodities, He was a steward of the Honorable Company of Merchant Adventurers.an English international company.
Although they met and married in Holland, Susannah Burnett was also English, and was reported to be extremely shrewd and business-savvy. Her father Raph Burnett was a draper in London.
In 1649, the Moseleys went to Virginia as part of the Virginia Cavalier emigration.
They apparently arrived in ostentatious style. They brought over two sons, a retinue of servants and others, his Coat-of-Arms, and 20 paintings including family portraits, as well as gold and jewelry. (According to one account: "«i»Records show that no family ever came to Virginia who brought more silver, jewelry, books and pictures than they.")«/i»
He traded jewelry for cattle after his arrival.
They settled in Lower Norfolk Co. VA.He established an estate known as Greenwich Plantation and later as Rolleston on the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River in the lower portion of Lower Norfolk county which later became Virginia Beach. William Moseley had 560 acres there - bought from a man called George Heigham. (Idris Bowen - Rollestonian article Spring 2002).
He became a Justice in Lower Norfolk County in 1650 a position he held until his death in 1655.

Biography
From St. Andrews Church Newsletter - (date unknown) by Bill Werner - Full Version Below
Meet Bill Townes
I thought that golf tournaments for women were a World War II phenomenon. I was wrong. Bill Townes has a silver trophy which reads: Airlie North Carolina November 1902 Golf Tournament - Won by Annie Blount DeRosset.
Annie Blount DeRosset was 29 when she won this trophy. Later she married an attorney, William A. Townes, and at the age of 43, in 1916, she gave birth to William A. Townes, Jr. It was a sad, beautiful, miraculous event. There were medical Complications and neither mother nor baby son was expected to survive. The Reverend William H. Milton, D.D.S. of St. James Episcopal Church in Wilmington was called in to administer baptism and rebirth into the heavenly Kingdom Annie Blount Townes held her son, witnessed his baptism and died four hours later. Bill survived, handicapped with a speech impediment and Reverend Milton became his Godfather.
Bill was born into a family of Episcopalians, and founding fathers of America Bill's mother worked and wrote for the Diocese of East Carolina. A great grandfather and a great great grandfather monopolized the office of Diocesan Treasurer during the 19th century. A portrait of William B. Giles, Bill's great great grandfather, watches over you from Bill's living room wall. William B. Giles was a member of the First Congress of the United States (late 18th century) and Governor of Virginia (early 19th century). Also from the Virginian family tree was his grandmother, Frances Giles Townes, member of St. Paul's Episcopal church in Richmond. Each Sunday Grandma Frances kept an eye on Jefferson Davis, seated two pews in front of her.
.
With this heritage and a birth so compassionately memorable as related to him, you can readily understand how young Bill Townes was not about to let his speech impediment impair his mission in life of being an active, involved, achieving person; professionally. personally and spiritually. He learned at a young age to put friends at ease over his speech impediment with the use of humor.
Bill graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in civil engineering. Early in his career he worked with a contractor in Goldsboro. In 1943 he met Ruth Parker who was working as a secretary at State College. She came North Carolina from Pennsylvania. A friend introduced Bill to Ruth and in 1945 they were married. In 1948, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter. Anne. Between that date and 1971, when Bill set up his engineering consulting firm in Morehead City, you might say he pursued a career as a PE, a peripatetic engineer. Bill has forgotten (or wants to forget) how many times the family moved, but his accomplishments included providing engineering services for the Coliseum in Athens, Georgia, apartment complexes in Charleston and Wachovia's head offices in Winston-Salem.
Bill takes pride in being one of the founders of St. Andrew's.
Bill's faith, his friends, warm memories of 47 years sharing joys and sorrows with Ruth and having Anne living nearby, have helped to move some of Bill's lonely hours to those of contented solitude. And now I understand more clearly why so many friends like to visit Bill Townes. It's not only because he brews a savory cup of coffee. Chatting with Bill is a rewarding and relaxing experience...because he continues to be a feeling, outgoing, spiritual person with a sense of purpose, and sense of history and last but not least, a sense of humor.
