Muriel Pearce Townes and her sister Marilyn Pearce White, were born and grew up in Norfolk Virginia. After marrying Peyton Townes, who worked for GE, Muriel moved toScranton Pennsylvania, Schenectady, NY, and finally in 1954 to Pittsfield, Mass. where they spent the rest of their lives.
Muriel's family was primarily from Virginia and North Carolina, although she also had ancestors in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. Her father John E. Pearce was born in North Carolina, after his father William Pearce moved there from Maryland. I have not found any information beyond John's Grandfather, James W. Pearce who lived in Philadelphia and later in Baltimore.
While John was born in North Carolina and grew up in the Norfolk, Virginia area, he lived in Virginia and in the New York City area for most of his adult life.John's mother, Margaret Wallace's family extended back to colonial North Carolina.
Muriel's mother, Nell Acree, had deep roots in Virginia. In addition to the Acrees, her ancestry included prominent families in eastern Virginia, including the Davis, Hudgins, Breeden and Foster families, among others.
