The family of Muriel Pearce's maternal grandfather, Leroy Acree can be traced back to Jacob Acra (b.1710). The early Acra ancestors were farmers in the area including Gloucester and Mathews counties in Virginia. They were active in local churches as vestry and trustees.
Leroy had a grocery business in Norfolk. Leroy's father Allen Acree was a ship captain and owner.
Despite the current spelling of Acree, Muriel's grandfather, Allen Washington Acra changed his last name to Acree for unknown reasons. His descendents have retained the name Acree.
DNA evidence and other research has concluded that this family is not connected to other families with the Acree name in North America.
The Jacob Acra family has not at this time been traced further back.
