Biography

William Townes lived in New Kent, Virginia. he was the father of John Townes who was the proven father of Armistead Townes and a great grandfather of Peyton Townes and siblings. (The paternal family line is William to John to Armistead to Adolphus to William to Peyton Townes.)

Details about William's life are unclear but certain likely facts can be determined by family histories, records and other information.

One family history says he came to America from England with a brother John sometime before 1715. He was a member of a larger Townes family who immigrated to North America from England in the 1600's and early 1700's. His exact relationship within this family is not clear, due to the fact that the Townes family had a tendency to name sons William and John. Therefore there were numerous William and John Townes in Virginia and the Carolinas in that era.

Among the facts that are known, he was married to Rebecca Clarke. In addition to John, their children were James, William Jr., Richard, Allen,Elizabeth and Rebecca Townes. Based on the fact that two of his sons married sisters in the Allen family of Blissland Parish makes it likely that William lived in the section of New Kentt near the York River and Ware Creek.

William of New Kent is listed or refereed to in land aquisitions in Amelia County, which was about 50 miles from there. It is not known whether William ultimately moved to Amelia County himself, but most of his offspring, including John, did and Amelia County became a geographic focal point of the Townes family for at least one generation.

(Records indicated that at least one John Townes had aquired land in the Amelia area around 1719. However, he would likely have been born before the John Townes who was a great grandfather. He may have been a brother or cousin or nephew of William. One land record indicated his wife was named Ann.) (Research):See attached sources.

Biography

A written Townes Family History described her as "a red head."

Otherwise no definitive records can be found about Rebecca Clarke (Possibly Mary Rebecca Clarke). There are records that indicate she may have been born in England. However there are also several Clarke family members in that area of Virginia. (Research):See attached sources.1,2

Judith Townes

Relatonship4th great-grandmother of Peyton Giles Townes
Tree

Biography

Her identity can also be deduced from a family historysion written in 1853 and updated in 1917 of the descendants of William Townes and Rebecca Clarke. The letter (written archaically) states that their daughter Mrs. Walker (Judith Townes) had two daughters who married Macons. Marriage records show that Gideon Macon married Rebecca Walker and his brother Lancelot Macon married Hannah Walker. The letter further indicates that one of the two Macons (which would be Rebecca Walker Macon) had a daughter who married a Giles and was the mother of Eliza M. Giles who was the wife of Armistead Townes., a documented 2nd great grandfather of mine. Elizabeth and Armistead Townes also filed a legislative petition with Elizabeth seeking the sale of a property owned by her late father William Giles.

Also, Rebecca could have been named after . Rebecca Clarke., and several of the Walker children have names that were likely from this familyincluding William Townes Walker ,Judith Walker, and Lucy Clarke Walker.

------------
From 1853 Townes history
Had granddaughter last name Macon who married a Giles (whose father or grandfather was ancestor of Gov. Giles). If so, she was mother of Eliza and Rebecca Giles(wife of John Leigh).
