Biography

William Giles, husband of Bethenia Knowles, is the first Giles ancestor that can be traced directly to the generation of Peyton Townes as an ancestor. His will names his children including John Giles, father of Col. William Giles. (See Virginia Kin reference for Will.) There is speculation about his parents (see references below) but records have not been identified by geneologists. (Research):See attached sources.1

Biography

John Townes Leigh (1786-1850)

John Townes Leigh had many family connections to the Townes family. He moved from Amelia County Virginia to Yalobusha County, Mississippi in 1835 with a number of family members. Peyton Townes's 2nd Great Grandfather Armistead Terrell Townes also moved there. In Amelia, Armistead and John had worked together in the offices of Sheriff and the courts. There were also family connections. John Townes Leigh's mother Priscilla, was Armistead's aunt. His first wife, Elizabeth Townes, was Armistead's neice. His second wife, Rebecca Giles, was the aunt of Armistead's son Adolphus, who was grandfather of Peyton Townes.

John Townes Leigh is sometimes listed as a pioneer settler of Coffeeville and sometimes listed as a pioneer of Grenada. (A daughter's obituary described the place they moved as "the wilderness of Mississippi.") He built a home which he called 'The Mountains," about ten miles north of the town of Grenada Ms. He had energy and vision and developed his lands until he became a man of considerable means." The Mountains plantation was located approximately halfway between Grenada and Coffeeville. His family was closely associated with Grenada and his granddaughter a member of the Episcopal Church there. In 1850, John Townes Leigh, his son, A.C. Leigh, and A.C. Leigh's infant son Egbert Leigh, all died.

(Some information from Early History of Grenada and Surrounding Areas (1967) by J.C. Hathorn, p.129).

Biography

This is a somewhat confusing portionb of the family tree. Although records indicate who this probably is there are somewhat conflicting interpretations on different sources. Some say the information refers to a different Arthur Moseley.

Also, this marriage could be a link to James Townes and Ann Pride as great grandparents of Peyton Townes and his family. Mary Lockett could be a direct descendent of Judith Eliza Townes a daughter of their's. However, there is also doifferences of opinion about whether this was Mary Lockett. One likely link is that a Thomas Lockett witnessed the Will of Arthur Moseley. (Research):Likely...Needs research.
