Biography

He likely inherited the Kingsland tract originally deeded to his grandfather Benjamin I, and was a successful man who was intimately involved with the dealings of Chesterfield County. In 1755 he married Mary Goode of the prominent Goode family, and by her had three sons, Benjamin IV,Thomas, and Edward..

Throughout his life, he expanded his land holdings including an additional 150-acre plantation in Amelia County which he purchased in 1778 and a plantation in western Chesterfield on the Sappony Creek, called "Willow Hill." It is not certain where Benjamin lived but it was likely the family estate of Spring Hill.

When the Revolution erupted, he was named Captain of the Chesterfield County militia for which he earned an honorable reputation for his service during the 1781 campaign through Virginia. Throughout the Revolutionary War, Benjamin and his sons also contributed to the cause through donations of produce, horses, and other goods to the continental army and cavalry.

He served as Sheriff and Magistrate for Chesterfield County. H e was thrown by his horse and died while collecting taxes. Benjmin is believed to be the first law enforcement in the United States to have died on duty.
