Biography

William Branch Giles Jr. was described in his obituary as a man of high integrity, and courteous and modest in manner. He was the son of Gov. William Giles.

His daughter Frances Gwynn Giles married Adolphus Townes, and they were the grandparents of Peyton Giles Townes.

He joined the U.S. Army as a Lt. in the Light Infantry in the Second Battalion. He was in the Mexican American War, including the Battle of Contrers and Cheyabusco (sp?). He was promoted from Lt. to Captain by brevet for meritorious service.

For a period around 1840, he lived in Alabama, where his daughter Frances Gwynn Giles was born .He also lived in Missouri for a period. Later in life he lived in Georgetown, Washington D.C. where he worked as an attorney/clerk. He died at the home of his sister Ann and her husband Judge Halyburton in Richmond, VA. as a result of combined health problems.

Biography

Frances Moseley Branch was the daughter of Edward Osborne Branch and Elizabeth Giles Moseley. She is a granddaughter of Amy Giles Moseley, who was the sister of Governor William Branch Giles, She married his son, Captain William Branch Giles Jr. So Gov. William Branch Giles was her husband's father and her grand uncle, and William Jr. was her cousin.

She grew up on her father's plantation in Chesterfield County.

Among her sisters was Elizabeth E. O. Giles, the wife of Thomas Peyton Giles, who was also a son of Capt. William Giles Jr. (Research):See attached sources.1

Biography

William attended the Virginia Military Institute for four years, graduating in 1860 ranked fortieth in his class of forty-one. He entered the Confederate States Army on 1 May 1861 and was appointed Second Lieutenant of Company A in the First Virginia Battalion. He behaved with great gallantry in the Battle of Kernstown and was promoted in May of 1862. He was made Captain in December of 1862. He was paroled at Appomattox. In 1874 he married Nancy Branch Giles.

He lived at Prospect Hill plantation in Virginia. He operated the farm and was involved in local civic activities and politics.Prospect Hill was not prosperous, His wife and two daughters alternated between living at Prospect Hill and running a boarding House in Washington DC. They also took in paying guests at Prospect Hill.
