Historical and Genealogical Notes

William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 18, No. 1.
(Jul., 1909), pp. 59-67.

GWYNN (GWYN, GWINN). Hugh Gwynn was an early settler in Charles River County (sub-
sequently York), and in 1639 represented it in the House of Burgesses. He was a justice
of York in 1641 and burgess in 1646. In 1642 he patented 1,700 acres at the mouth of
the Pyanketank river,. Col. Hugh Gwynn was burgess for Gloucester County in 1652,
and probably died about 1654, when Elizabeth Gwynn patented 700 acres in Isle of Wight
County, as executrix of Hugh Gwynn, who had patented the same in 1640.

Hugh Gwynn, doubtless his son, was vestryman of Kingston parish, Gloucester in 1680. Probably another son was Rev. John Gwynn a distinguished royalist minister of Ware Parish, Gloucester Co.,
who came to Virginia in the Cromwellian times. He had issue: Edmund Gwynn, who married Lucy Bernard, daughter of Col. William Bernard and Lucy Higginson, his wife
(daughter of Capt. Robert Higginson) (Va. Magazine, IV., 204). Edmund Gwynn made his
will March 10, 1682, and names issue: (1) Lucy, who married Thomas Reade, and (2) John.

Humphrey and John Gwynn at a General Court held Sept. 30, 1681, in their own right and
as attorney for Humphrey Stafford, petitioned for the administration of the estate of
Col. John Burnham, deceased, on the ground that they were his nearest kin (Middlesex
Records). In 1698-9 Mr. John Gwynn is mentioned in the Middlesex Records has having
married Margaret, the relict of Mr. Francis Bridge, who died about 1678, at which time
she spoke of Major Robert Beverley as her "father-in-law".

The destruction of the records of Gloucester and Matthews prevents us from knowing much of John Gwynn, but it is very possible that he was the father of John Gwynn, who married, February 25, 1720, Mildred Reade.

Biography

Hugh Gwynn was an early settler in Charles River County (subsequently York), and in 1639 represented it in the House of Burgesses. He was a justice of York in 1641 and burgess in 1646. Col. Hugh Gwynn was burgess for Gloucester County in 1652,
and probably died about 1654,

He established a settlement known as Gwynn's Island at the mouth of the Pyanketank river and Chesepeake Bay. Legend says he was given the site by Powhattan after rescuing his daughter Pocahantas. Wheher that is true, in 1642 he patented 1,700 acres through the headright process for transporting immigrants to the New World. Gwynn's Island became a community and it were sold off by his family through the 19th Century.

One unfortunate distinction is that he is believed to be responsible for the first case of slavery of a a black person in America. Three of his indentured servants -- two white men and one black -- escaped before their pewriod was over. They were captured. The two white men and had an additional year added to their servitude, but the black man was sentenced to a life of servitude, in effect making him a slave..

Henrico County website -- ( https://henrico.us/locations/captain-thomas-harris/

Captain Thomas Harris came to the Jamestown Colony from England in May 1611 on the ship Prosperous with Sir Thomas Dale. In 1635, a patent was issued to Harris for 750 acres. In 1636 this property was called Longfield and later was known as Curles. The land ownership of Harris grew to be in excess of 2500 acres. Harris served as a subscriber in the 2nd Corporation of Jamestown, and served in the House of Burgesses. In 1649, Harris was made commander of the Henrico Militia. Following his death in 1658, the property passed through several hands before being sold to Nathaniel Bacon in 1674. )
----------------------------
On Jamestowne Society website:( https://www.jamestowne.org/blog/thomas-harris-and-thomas-ligon-burgesses-from-henrico-county. )
Thomas Harris (1586-c. 1649) Henrico County, VA-- Thomas Harris, an ancient planter and inhabitant of Virginia listed on the 1624-25 Muster, arrived on the Prosperous in May 1611 with a group brought by Sir Thomas Dale to establish a settlement in Henricus. On 18 Nov 1618, Harris was granted 100 acres as an Ancient Planter at Neck of Land and is listed in the Muster at Charles City as age 38 with his first wife Adria (Hoare), age 23.

Thomas Harris and Adria were married in Virginia, as she had come to America in 1621 on the Marmaduke. Thomas acquired another 650 acres of land for the transportation of 13 persons to the colony and another 400 acres by inheritance. Harris also acquired the 700 acres known as Longfield that belonged to his neighbors, Edward and Ann Gurganey, when Ann Gurganey bequeathed the land to Harris in her 1619/20 will; this land was patented in his name in 1637.

Harris was elected as a Burgess for Neck of Land in 1624 and for Henrico in 1640, 1647-48. He also served as a Commissioner for the "Upper Parts," land which included Henrico, and as the Commander of Henrico County. After the death of his wife Adria, he married the widow of William Vincent, Joane, who was five years his senior. The only children of Thomas Harris were by his first wife Adria: Mary and William. Mary married Thomas Ligon, and William inherited Longfield in his father's will, made about 1649 but now lost.

Biography

She was one of the maidens who arrived on the MARMADUKE in November 1621. There are two lists of maidens sent over to prospective husbands on that voyage. Both state that she was Audry Hoare, aged 19, born at Aylesbury, co. Bucks., her father being a shoemaker. (William Thorndale, "Maides for Virginia in 1621 as Described in the Ferrar Papers," THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST 39 [1995]:243-52, 250, 252; and Lyndon H. Hart, "Some Clues to the Wives of Virginia Residents at the Time of the Muster," THE MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY 34 [1996]:51-54.) Her age actually slightly exaggerated. "Audrey the daughter of Thomas Hoare [was bp. at Aylesbury] the xxvth day of August" 1604. Her father, Thomas Hoare, had married Julyan Tripplett at Aylesbury, 12 Feb. 1592/3. The will of her father, Thomas Hoare, cordwainer, of Aylesbury, was dated 31 Jan. 1626/7 and proved 5 April 1627 (Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, original wills, 1627, no. 89 [FHL film #88,557]). The will includes the following important bequest: 'It'm I give to my daughter Awadrye xij d to be payde her when she doth demande it after my desease and allso to her daughter.
