Biography

Some sourcers say he is the fathr of William Giles, but otthers say it is inconclusive. He is included here with a question mark..

Biography from WikiTree

The birth date of John Giles is unconfirmed. He is first found in records in 1681, the approximate date of his marriage.

He was an attorney. He was also Burgess from Isle of Wight County in the Assembly of 1696-97, 1698, 1699. His brother Thomas Giles was Burgess from Isle of Wight County in the sessions of May 13 and June 18, 1702.[

John Giles married Philaretus Woodward about 1681 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. She was daughter of Thomas Woodward, who was clerk of the court of Isle of Wight and served as surveyor General of the Albermarle (North Carolina).John and Philaretus are named as husband and wife in the inventory of the estate of Thomas Woodward on 9 December 1681. On 17 April 1684, Philareta's mother, Katherine Woodward, left a legacy to "Daughter Philareta Giles and her son, which is not yet christened." These dates do indicate a marriage about 1681 with the birth of their first child after April 1684.

They appear to sell land in 1703 in North Carolina that was part of a patent for 2000 A granted to Thomas Woodward Sr and Thomas Woodward Jr on 20 Sep 1663. (Research):

Facts about Arthur Moseley born 1660
Arthur was a large land owner, leather sealer; of Henrico County, Virginia, Grand Juro 1699; surveyor of highways in Henrico County, 1712; Arthur's wife Sarah Hancock was about 15 years old when she married him. Arthur was seven years older than Sarah. Arthur and Sarah lived on a plantation called "Red Water Lake" which was 2 miles west of the great bend of the James River.

On 16th May 1692 Arthur was described as a "Sworn leather sealer" in Henrico County. A leather sealer was one who attached an official mark or seal to leather as evidence of quality and "SWORN" was one who had taken a formal oath of a profession. Therefore he was an official leather inspector.

On February 1 1690 Edward Stratton sold Arthur 150 acres on the south side of the James River next to Abraham Womack and Gilbert Elan for $25.00. Moseley inherited 300 acres from his father and in 1704 was paying quit rents this tract plus the 150 acre Stratton puchase, a total of 450 acres. Arthur was granted 5--acres at Butterwood Swamp the 16th of April 1715 and 4--acres on the north side of Swift Creek and the east side of Tomahaw Creek the 9th July 1724. His wife's uncle Richard Ligon had surveyed the 500 acre tract for Moseley.

Moseley was involved in many other land transactions in Henrico County. He and Henry Farmer bought 308 acres from John Worsham and Francis Patram that they divided in 1709. Abraham Bayley sold Arthur 1/2 acre on the north side of the James River. Arthur bought 275 acres on a branch of Swift Creek from Richard Grills in 1716, a 150 acre portion of which he deeded James Akin in 1726. On August 1727 Arthur Moseley sold 75 acres-part had belonged to his father-in-law and part where his son Arthur lived- to William Cheatham. In June 1728 Moseley sold a 1/2 acre lot in the town of Bermuda to William Worsham, Jr.

Biography

Arthur was born in Holland and emigigrated with his parents to Virginia. He was a Member of the House of Burgesses for Lower Norfolk in 1676 at the time of Bacons Rebellion. Arthur originally lived at Greenwich, his father's plantation on the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River (in today's Virginia Beach), for six years. When his father died in 1655, he received a sizeable inheritance, including property on Broad Creek where he lived for about 30 years before moving about 1690 to Norfolk town.

Arthur purchased lots in Norfolk Town itself. It was this property acquisition that led to his need to become a naturalized (British) citizen in 1692. On May 16, 1694, Arthur also became licensed to keep an "ordinary" (an ordinary tavern with a restaurant) in Norfolk.

From Jamestowne Society website

Arthur, the son of William and Susannah (Burnet) Mosely, was born in about 1636 in Delft, Zuid-Holland, The Netherlands, and came to Virginia with his parents in 1649 at age 13. His portrait, painted when Arthur was age 10 or 11 by an unknown artist in Rotterdam, was brought to America by the family. The actual portrait, missing since the early 1900's, shows him with dark eyes and hair. His father, who owned a plantation on the Elizabeth River, died in 1655, leaving Arthur his plantation and property on Broad Creek, where Arthur lived until he moved to Norfolk town in 1690.

In 1676 at the time of Bacon's Rebellion, Arthur became a Burgess for Lower Norfolk, was licensed to keep an Ordinary in Norfolk Town, and appears to have served intermittently as a justice of the peace for many years. Before 17 Sep 1692, he was forced to become a naturalized British citizen to legalize the titles for his land, originally purchased while he was an immigrant.

Arthur married twice and possibly a third time. Records based the mothers of the individual children are not known, but it is generally accepted by the order listed in his will dated 1 Feb 1700 that his first wife, Sarah Joan Hancock, whom he married about 1600, was probably the mother of Arthur (c. 1661 - c. 1728), William (c. 1663 - c. 1714), Edward (c. 1667 -1715), George (c. 1671 - 1718), Susanna (c. 1673 - c. 1700), and Mary Ann (c. 1674 - c. 1722). When Sarah Moseley died Arthur married Anne Hargrave before June 5, 1678. Anne Hargrave Moseley was probably the mother of five children.

Biography

She may be a direct connection to James Townes and Ann Pride who were early Townes immigrants to Virginia. They had a son William who has been confused in some geneologies with the William who was a great grandfather of Peyton Townes and sblings. While they may have been related, it has been determined that they are two seperate Williams and branches of the overall Townes family.

However, James and Ann are possibly -- but not certainly -- great grandparents of Peyton Townes through the Lockett to Moseley family to Branch to Giles line. The potential link is Mary Lockett. Some records have her marrying Arthur Moseley. Others however say this is not the same Mary descended from James Townes and may have been a Mary Gibson instead. This has not been resolved.
