Peyton Townes and his siblings are descended from the Gwynn family through Frances Ann Gwynn, their 2nd great grandmother and the wife of Gov. William Branch Giles.
She was the daughter of Thomas Peyton Gwynn. He was the son of Humphrey Gwynn and Frances Peyton. She was the daughter of Thomas Peyton and Frances Tabb. Humphrey Gwynn was the owner of Gwynn Island, which was the site of a battle during the Revolutionary War when British officer Lord Dunmore occupied it in 1776 but was subsequently driven off the island.
Humphrey Gwynn was probably descended from Col. Hugh Gwynn a prominent early settler who established a community at Gwynn's Island on the Chesapeake Bay. However, whether he is a direct grandson of Hugh Gwynn is not definite, due to damage to some early records. (See details on Thomas Peyton Gwynn's Individual page.)
Hugh Gwynn was born abt 1608 in Wales. He married Ann Joyce Burnham (abt 1610-1650). He came to America and first lived in York County, VA (called Charles River County then). In 1639 he represented Charles River County in the House of Burgesses. In 1642 he patented 1,700 acres at the mouth of the Pyanketank river.
He was a Justice of the Peace in York County, VA in 1641 and represented York County again in the House of Burgesses in 1646. Later he moved to Gloucester County, Virginia and served in the House of Burgesses in 1652. (Gloucester County is on one side of York River and York County is on the other side.)
