Biography

Details have to be pinned down. His birth is listed in sources as 1634.

However, a Gilbert Piatt is first mentioned as a "servant" imported by Elizabeth Parker, widow, in a patent which received 12 February 1635. Ithat may have been his father. In 1679 documents, Gilbert Platt was listed as Mr. which was a term to describe socially elevated persons. So it is likely that Platt started from a reltively lowly position and worked his way up.

(Torrence, William Clayton. "Henrico County, Virginia: Beginnings of Its Families: Part I." The William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, vol. 24, no. 2, 1915, pp. 116-42. JSTOR, https://doi.org/10.2307/1914991. Accessed 21 Dec. 2023).

His wife, Mary was described as a contentious person who was prone to starting arguments conflicts. She had been previously married. She married Gilbert Platt in 1678, Gilbert Platt, who died 1691. Complaining of bad treatment from his wife and stepson, Joseph Tanner, he (Gilbert Platt) left his property to Edward Osborne and wife (brother of Thomas, and son of Thomas Osborne, Sr.) because "they cared for him in his last illness."

Family:

DaughterElizabeth Martiau+ (b. 12 December 1625, d. before 24 January 1687)

Biography

He is a great grandfather in the Peyton Townes family through the Gwynn line. A French Protestant, naturalized in England before sailing for Virginia on the Francis Bonaventure in the spring of 1620, came to the colony as one of two agents of the Earl of Huntington. He settled at Elizabeth City where he was listed in the census, 1623/4, and also in the muster, Feb. 1624/5 (as Capt. Nicholas Martue), when his age is given as 33 years. Capt. Martiau was granted over 1000 acres at Chiskiake on the Pamunkey [York] River for "the adventures of himself, his wife and 10 persons the first year to Chiskiake and for transportation at his own expense of 14 persons into the Colony.

He was named in an Act of Assembly, 6 Jan. 1639/40, as a tobacco viewer from the lower side of the parish to the eastern side of Capt. Utye's Creek. Martiau was elected to the House of Burgesses from "Kiskyacke and the Isle of Kent," 1632, and was among the first appointees as a justice of York County, serving from 1633 until his death. Court was held at times at his home.
The 1632 Assembly of which Martiau was a member drew up a set of grievances to be sent to the Privy Council in England, setting forth conditions in the coloney which were a prelude to the "Thrusting out of Sir John Harvey" as governor of Virginia, 1635. In this first rebellion against autocratic rule, Capt. Martiau was a leader, having been one of the three spokesmen at a meeting of discontented colonists held at Yorktown.

Biography

Benjamin II (b.1700 d.1762) living just across Proctors Creek with his uncle, received the Spring Hill estate upon his coming of age in 1721. Where his home plantation was, and whether it was on his father's part of the original Kingsland plantation or if it was in western Chesterfield or Amelia County is not clear.

Benjamin had a life of growth and success. In 1727, he married his cousin Mary Osborne, and
by her had three sons, Benjamin III, Thomas, and Edward.

In 1736, Henrico County taxed Benjamin on six levies and 300 acres.. By the 1740s, he came into possession of at least a portion of the Redwater Mill, a water mill located at the mouth of Redwater Creek and Proctors Creek just across from his portion of Kingsland. The mill was established in 1711 by the Hatcher, Mosely, and Turpin families. All three of the founding families were closely intertwined through marriage with both the Branch family and the Osborne families. Benjamin also likely continued to be a planter and by the time of his death in 1762, had amassed nearly 1,500 acres of additional land in western Chesterfield County along the Sappony Creek, as well as additional land in Amelia County, placing him among the upper level of wealth in the county.
