Biography
(Research):See attached sources.
1 John Townes was a great grandfather of Peyton Townes and his siblings. This is confirmed by a will naming Armistead Terrell Townes as his son, who was the father of Adolphus Townes, the grandfather of Peyton.
John Townes was born in New Kent County and later lived in Amelia County. He was a planter, businessman and was also active in civic affairs. He was married to Martha Allen, who was a member of an influential family. There are many public records of land transactions and other matters in Amelia County involving John Townes, which also include references to a father, William, and a son John Jr.
However, identifying his activities and role within the overall extended early Townes family more precisely is difficult. There were numerous John Townes and William Townes in the early family in Virginia and branches in the Carolinas. So it cannot be said for certain whether a record refers to him specifically or to his son or nephews, uncles, cousins or other relatives names John Townes in that era.
(Records indicated that at least one John Townes had aquired land in the Amelia area around 1719. However, he would likely have been born before the John Townes who was a great grandfather. He may have been a brother or cousin or nephew of William Townes. One land record indicated his wife was named Ann.)

Biography
The Allens were a large and significant family in Virginia. Martha ("Mollie") Allen's direct family were large landowners who were described in a Townes family history as "cultured and intellectual." It also mentioned that her son Armistead always spoke of his mother with pride.
As can best be ascertained from records, her parents were most likely Richard Allen and Elizabeth Terrell of New Kent. She is mentioned in a family Bible of Richard Allen. In addition, the name Terrell is included among their descendents, including their son Armistead Terrell Townes.
According to family history, John Townes's brother James married one of Martha's sisters.

Research
In the Townes Family History letter, one of her sisters is described as a "Mrs. Semple." The description here seems to verify that. which supports Martha's identity as daughter of Richard Allen.
Martha and Dorcas Allen were sisters. Marriage to Gabriel Maupin seems to confirm Townes history letter of Martha's identity.
