Biography

For a least a quarter of a century Richard Cocke of Bremo was a leading and influential person of Henrico County. Among other offices he was a Lt. Col. in the local militia and a member of the House of Burgesses.

Bremo was the original plantation of Richard Cocke, who was granted a patent for 3,000 acres on the James River on 6 Mar 1636. Old "Bremo" the first "Bremo" in Virginia, is in the upper part of Curles Neck, on the James, in Henrico County, about fifteen miles east of Richmond.

The will of Richard Cocke2 was admitted to probate December 2,
I706,. He left one son, Richard3 (who is his executor), and two daughters, Elizabeth and Martha and a number of grandchildren. He leaves an estate worth at present $35,ooo.

The Cockes at this time were all nestled along Turkey Island Creek, Thomas, Richard, William, Thomas, and Stephens on the north side of the creek in Henrico; Richard Cocke,2 the younger, on the south side, at " Old Man's Creek," in Charles City county. Henrico and Charles City counties originally lay on both sides of the river, including what are now Prince George and Chesterfield. is now called City Point, at the mouth of the Appomattox.

Biography

Temperance Bailey was a member of a prominent cast of characters in early Virginia history. Her mother Cicely had a very colorful and adventurous life and was married several times. (See articles below.)

She is a great grandmother of Peyton Townes through two seperate paths. Temperance was the wife of Richard Cocke, an immigrant who was the progenitor of a large and prominent Virginia family from whom Peyton Townes is derscended. She was also maerried to married a John Browne, and they had a child Mary, whose family line edternded from the Osborne and Branch families to Peyton.
