Louise Nutt Parsley was Louise Rutland Townes's mother. The earliest known ancestor of the Parsley family was Robert Parsley, who moved from England to North Carolina and married Elizabeth Grant. His son, Oscar Grant Parsley became a prominent businessman and civic leader in Wilmington. He operated sawmills and trading companies, and was the largest landowner in the town. He also served as Mayor of Wilmington. His son Oscar Grant Parsley Jr. also worked in the family businesses and was prominent and popular in the community. However, at least one member of the family, Walter L. Parsley, (Oscar Jr.'s brother) had an integral role in a violent white supremacist riot in Wilmington in 1898.
